Nissan RB26 Powered Mustang

Some of you rev heads may have seen The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift from a few years back and some of you may have missed it all together, but one of the most intriguing things in the movie was a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback powered by a Nissan RB26DETT which is originally found in the holy grail of all Japanese performance cars, the Nissan Skyline GT-R. The twin-turbocharged inline six delivers about 320-330 horsepower….

There was a lot of bickering about this due to the fact the vintage enthusiasts were angry that a iconic car had it’s heart ripped out and replaced with a modern Japanese engine, while the modern Japanese car lovers were angry such an engine was placed in such an ‘unworthy’ car.

Here’s some information on the unique car.

Though if you’re interested in buying the car you can do that also. The Volo Auto Museum is selling one of the actual movie cars. There’s no price tag attached but i bet it’s not cheap.

Ha! Let them bicker all they want, I’m a huge Import & Muscle car fan and I think this car is the best of both worlds.

  2. Cameron says:

I totally agree Jesse, I wouldn’t mind a second mustang with this engine in it!

  3. mike says:

Yeah… the engine didn’t work in the car. They wanted to run the V-6 to go with the whole “drifter” theme, but they had plumbing issues with it. they pulled it out and put in the engine that SHOULD have been in the car the whole time, a rumbling AMERICAN V-8. Still, the car is amazing. Single exhaust exit looks kind of funny though…

  4. peter says:

rb26dett is a twin turbo STRAIGHT six…not a v6, sorta a lot longer. direct competitor of the bmw straight six’s and the supra’s straight six….straight six’s have a very flat torque band thats highly desirable. just add boost, right?

  5. Wesley says:

This car was the best one out of all of thim it must of sucked getin the dents from the race.

  6. car dolly says:

  10. sunny says:

i wish to buy this car… my dream car. i did not drive but, i want to drive that car….

  11. NOT IMPORTANT says:

theres haters everywhere you go. but i dont see anything wrong with this.

but judging from fast and furious’s sales, they probably shuoldve overcame the plumbing issue. all they needed to do was run coolant lines to a radiator. whats so difficult about that?

i would do the same swap if i had the resources. ill just stick to my 300zx twin turbo and let the swap pro’s do their thing. makes for some good old car porn anyway :)

  12. NOT IMPORTANT says:

although that steering wheel has GOT to go. should have went with a nardi wood grain wheel in my opinion.

  13. Boosted Bird says:

OK first i wanna say that the motor not working in the car is not true. The motor was installed gotten to run and drive, and like a bat outta hell for that matter. It is true that the stunt driver who did the drift scenes on the mountain did use a car with a small block windsor v8 in it, but that is mostly because he wanted more low end torque because that is what he was used to for his driving style. The RB outran the V8 in the 1/4 tho so dont give it discredit. I am currently doing an RB26 swap into a 68 Firebird. Why? Cuz 1. It’s unique 2. It’s fast 3. I love high RPMs 4. Its actually cheaper than an LS1 swap. (LS1 crate motor=$6k at least not even including the tranny and other needed stuff Used with 30k miles RB26+ RB25 tranny+ all turbos, wiring, ECU, motor mounts, etc= $5,500) 5. Building a good 350 MAYBE costs a little less but even if done well its still just another 350 chevy and theres just too many of them to the point where they no longer impress me at all. 6. It pisses off rednecks. Oh and i have always wondered… Why is it OK to put a 350 Chevy in a 32 Ford But any other time you put a motor in a car that isn’t from the same manufacturer u have committed heresy? What is wrong with liking the beautiful design of a classic car and also liking the rush of 8000 turbocharged RPMs?

  18. Heighsvf says:

Hey guys, I’m 14, and my dad said if I can find an old car. He’ll help me get it up and running again. Can anyone tell me where I can find an old 1967 mustang fastback? I live in Oklahoma

  19. ken says:

The nissan powered car was NOT faster than the V8………… had the water pump not failed the 1/4 mile time for the windsor powered mustang would have beaten the Nissan………. they did have issues with installing the motor…………and the action shots? all by the windsor powered cars…………… They need to rip that pos out of that poor car and get an engine worthy of a 67 fastback.

  20. ken says:

boosted? maybe because FORD offerd a 8,000 rpm motor right now that makes awesome hp & torque? for 6 k? AND IT IS AN EASIER SWAP.
