eBay Find – 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 Supersnake One of One

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby Supersnake GT40 One of One Goodyear

Want a one of a kind 1967 Shelby GT500? well for a cool $3 million you can. I managed to come across this unique piece of Shelby history up for auction on ebay.

Here’s how the story goes. In 1967 Carrol Shelby asked Fred Goodell (Shelby America’s Chief Engineer) to put together a 1967 GT500 powered by a super high performance 427 engine which could be used a test vehicle by Goodyear. The white GT500 they chose was fitted with an engine from a GT40, a 427 medium-rise GT40 MK II engine. The same engine that powered the GT40’s to victory at LeMans. A normal GT500 has a 428 rated at 355 hp. This car had a aluminum headed 427 rated at 520 hp.

The car also featured an aluminum water pump, mechanical lifters, a single 780CM Holley 4V carburetor and a unique “bundle of snakes” GT40-style exhaust header system. It also had a large oil cooler and remote filter, a 4 speed transmission and a 4.11 rear end with a Detroit Locker “No-Spin” center section. The car was topped off with special Guardsman Blue stripes running up and over the top in a narrow-wide-narrow row pattern.

Shelby originally wanted to build 50 Super Snakes which would be sold exclusively through Shelby dealerships as an alternative to the 427-powered Camaros and Chevelles and 426 MoPars which were in a league above the standard Shelbys.

However when all the costs were added up the sticker price came to a whopping $7500, which in those days was quite a substantial amount of money, so the whole project was shelved and the car was eventually bought by two airline pilots who dragged raced it on weekends.

From there the trail runs cold until now with the car showing up on ebay. The auction gives no details on where the car has been in those lost years, but it does look to be in top condition. So who’s going to buy it for me? I’ll swap you my car.

Here are three pictures and videos on the car thanks to SuperSnake.org.

  6. Without a doupt the nicest car ever. Cars are looking worse and worse and there will never be a car to match it. 3 million is too cheap, makes me sad to think of it.
