So last week I said things were starting to move along and the car was going in for it’s right hand drive conversion. News just in is that the body kit has almost been removed so she can go in for her conversion.

The kit was fully fitted but not glued on as it needs to be removed for easy access to the firewall for conversion. Now with it all fitting well it is removed so the final small things can be done before we go to paint.

Spoke to my builder, John, yesterday and he said “we are stripping the car for the conversion guys so it is almost back to a bare shell again. I am keeping the pressure on the conversion guys, I don’t want to miss out.”

It seems the conversion guys are really busy, so if we hold off we possibly may have to wait another month or two.

No pictures to update you all with, nothing new to show really. The story picture is of how she looked before the kit was fitted which is somewhat what she will look like now.

More to follow.

Just a short update as to what is happening now with my car. Things are starting to happen again and hopefully will have a major update soon.

We’ve had a chat to the conversion guys this past week and the good news is they think they can fit in my old girl in the next few weeks and we could have the dash done fairly soon.

My friend, Toby, who is also having his car done is still having his body kit fitted up which is requiring most of the man hours at the shop, but this should be done in the next four to five weeks giving my car some well deserved attention.

I’ve also spoken to John, my builder, about the new A/C reproduction register kits, and he has assured me not to worry. We will look into this when we start putting the car back together. I tend to get excited and ahead of myself on these things.

Speaking of which, I’m starting to get excited about these new developments. I always get itchy sitting around while my car is in the corner of the shed gathering dust, but when things begin to happen I start to smile. I can’t tell you how happy I am she’s about to get some more major work done.

I’ll keep you posted as to how the conversion goes and hopefully get some good pictures.

Here’s the last set of photos I have:

They’ve arrived! The Bosch Xenon projector headlights with D2S bulbs are here, along with the ballasts and wiring harness.

They look fantastic however I have found some issues I’m a little worried about. I couldn’t get them on camera but you can tell the resin used to seal up the casing produced some kind of fumes which have settled on the inside of the unit. One of them you can see small finger prints on the inside and the other has a bit of a ‘fogging’ like look to it.

I would be interested to see what happens when the lights are fired up because i know the produce and high intensity beam that produces quite a substantial amount of heat. Will it just burn these imperfections away, or will they effect the beam? I guess we’ll have to wait an see.

The Shelby taillights have been fitted and the side exhaust tips are being worked on. It’s coming down to the little odds and end with the whole kit fitting.

Well after a very demoralising weekend having been told the bill for the body work, fitting the kit and labour I’ve finally feeling a bit better after getting some more photos! No matter how much this project is costing me all my worries and fears dissipate when i see the old girl taking shape.

Firstly we’ve encountered some problems with the side exhaust tips fitting into the kit. Mainly due to our Australian kit being slightly different to the American ones, so the Tip doesn’t exit in the exact same spot. This means we”ve had to cut the end of the exhaust tips and we will re-weld the ends at a different angle, well that’s the plan anyway.

Now on to the rear Shelby taillights, Not much to say here as the rear panel was put in a few weeks ago and special attention was made to it being neat and flush. So the lights went in smoothly as you can see from the pictures.

Ok so it’s a pretty big update here as I have made one in a while. Firstly the rear panel is now glued in place and almost ready for the rear lights setup to start being installed, thankfully we haven’t had too many troubles with the back.

The fuel filler tube is now finished and also ready to start going in. You can see we have added a steel breather tube whereas a lot of others use a rubber breather. I think it works better this way.

Read on for the pics

Now to the front. We’re finally happy with the fitting of the hood. Take a look at the pics and you will see it’s fitting really nice! finally! We’ve got most of the PIAA lights installed in the front and most are fitting nice, but take a look at the pictures with the lower valance off.. you can see the lower fog lights are not in line with each other.. this is to show you how out of whack these kits are! With the kit on they ‘look’ in line… but this is only because of the modifications that had to be done underneath.

Everything seems to be going smoothly now. Our only hitches at the moment are the side exhaust tips. It seems with this Australian kit the holes for the tips don’t drop down as far as the American kits, so my Aeroform tips are coming out too low. So we’re going to have to cut these tips up!

The second problem is the front headlights. Which are finally being shipped this week from the US, but more on that later. For now enjoy these. photos.

Ok I only have one updated picture for the moment, but the hood is fitting damn fine now. We are going back to the tail light panel for the rest of this week. We still need to do a few things to the nose but it is looking very good and as you can see the gaps are looking almost perfect.

Well we’ve had a lot of issues with the hood and it’s beginning to become a major headache. It seems the front nose is not square to start with and being perfectionists we’d like to get it straight on. But as you can see from the above image she’s beginning to come together!

The inner driving lights are 1 inch different in the height and the nose is about 1 inch different from one side to the other. The fact is that I think even the original kit has this problem, because this kit was molded from one of the original kits, I think. But with the nose like it is, it is going to look like rubbish, I am not sure how we are going to fix this but we can do it. The grille is fitting OK but still not 100% happy with the set up but it will work once we have finished modifying the nose. The Hood hits on the grille when it is closed and the Hood does not follow the lines of the guards or the original Hood. Going to need a lot of mucking around to fix this.

This image gives and idea of how out it is.

So as you all know the car is going to have functional upper scoops and lower scoops. Early on the scoops were functional but as costs got higher and higher they had to cut back and in 1967 the lower brake cooling vents were not functional as Carrol Shelby said on TLC’s “Rides”

In 65′ everything was functional……air scoops, all that stuff was functional. 66′ semi functional. 67′ and 8, not so functional anymore.

I’m doing it a bit differently and opening them up, not that they will need cooling though!

Anyway we’ve made some progress and here are two pictures showing the tub cut through the side and into the wheel arch from the inside.

1967 Mustang kit car complete
