The car was put up for auction by Cinema Vehicle Services, the company responsible for producing the twelve cars used in the movie. “Eleanor has become one of the most widely recognized movie star muscle cars in the world, so when the decision was made to offer the ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ Hero car for sale, Mecum’s Spring Classic auction in Indianapolis seemed like the perfect venue,” commented Ray Claridge, owner of Cinema Vehicle Services.

The auction saw one of the biggest crowds and interest at any of Mecums events though this was not to be outdone by the Shelby GT500 supersnake one of one that sold on Friday for $1.3million. Checkout both auctions below.

The show follows self-described petrol-sexual motorhead Richard Rawlings and mechanical prodigy Aaron Kaufmann as they search far-flung corners of the country for forgotten and derelict classic cars to restore at their Gas Monkey Garage. Heaps of rust are transformed into gleaming road warriors and sold to the top bidder.

Though what caught our eye recently was one episode in which a 1967 Mustang Convertible was restored. There’s an interesting twist at the end we don’t want to spoil for you. So take a look for yourself.

Then the two were nowhere to be found. Alleged (though unproven) to have left the country. So big were the losses that one local car shop offered their services to customers who were stung. Then things went quiet. Until now.

This week Edwin Verdung, 26, of Dearborn was arrested on three counts of larceny by false pretenses; two counts of writing a check with non-sufficient funds, and one count of writing a check having no account. Strangely enough non of the 2010 ‘Memory Lane Classic’ fraud allegations seem to be involved with the case.

Verdung purchased a 2011 Ford Fusion from Templin Auto Sales for $9,500 in February in which the check bounced. Police said they also learned Verdung had issued a check for $8,000 with non-sufficient funds as a downpayment for a BMW had written a check for $3,300 to cover a security deposit and rent to lease a garage in Wayne. The property owner told police the account was inactive.

“This was good police work by several of our officers,” said Wayne County Sheriff Benny N. Napoleon. “With the cooperation of the victims, we were able to take a career criminal off the streets.”

If found guilty, the larceny charges alone carry a sentence of five years in prison and or a $10,000 fine. Verdung could also receive up to two years in prison for the bad check charges.

Police say there may be other cases involving bad checks written by Verdung. Anyone with information should contact the Sheriff’s Office at 734-721-7519.

This one from what we can see by the VIN’s is not one of the others we have reported on in the past. Most notably the one that sold at the COYS auction at Autosport International in England last year.

This particular example appears to be one of only three ‘hero’ cars used during filming. These hero cars were used for closeups, promotional shoots and actor dialogue scenes.

Gates open at 8 a.m. each day and general admission can be purchased at the door for $20 per person; children 12 and younger will be admitted at no cost. Shelby originally wanted to build 50 Super Snakes which would be sold exclusively through Shelby dealerships as an alternative to the 427-powered Camaros and Chevelles and 426 MoPars which were in a league above the standard Shelbys.

However when all the costs were added up the sticker price came to a whopping $7500, which in those days was quite a substantial amount of money, so the whole project was shelved and the car was eventually bought by two airline pilots who dragged raced it on weekends. Two subsequent owners remain unidentified today, but records show that the car was purchased in 1970 by Bobby Pierce of Benbrock, TX, who cared for it for 25 years before selling it to David Loebenberg of Florida.

The Super Snake returned to California 7 years later when it was bought by Charles Lillard, who later sold it to Richard Ellis, a collector of rare Mustangs in Illinois, at which point the car registered 26,000 miles on the odometer and showed almost no deterioration.

Ellis proceeded with what he describes as a “light restoration”, locating the correct wires and hoses for the engine compartment, a period-correct Rotunda fire extinguisher, NOS Shelby 10-spoke wheels and, amazingly, four brand-new Thunderbolt whitewall tires in the proper size. As Ellis explained in a September, 2011 interview with Auto Enthusiast Magazine, “I wanted to own this piece of Shelby history worse than anything. It was well cared for by its previous owners, but I’ve put a lot of effort into returning it to the state it was in on the day of the tire test.”

“The Thunderbolts were made for … well, boring family cars in the ’60s, which is why nobody reproduces them or has even heard of them for 35 years. I found what has to be the only surviving set in a warehouse in Akron, Ohio. I’m sure Shelby pulled the original Thunderbolts and threw them away when the car got back to California.

“Now, when you see a picture of the Super Snake and it’s got skinny whitewall tires, you’ll know it is either from the Goodyear test or from the time it’s spent in my collection.”

Built with the heart of a Le Mans champion yet ultimately destined for but one day in the sun, there is only one Super Snake, the result of a confluence of forces that could only have happened in the charmed life of one Carroll Shelby.

The car is scheduled to cross the block May 17 at approximetly 5:30pm.

In all, only 1,001 of these fastbacks were built for Hertz in 1966. The make-up consisted of 999 units of the following colors: A majority in Raven Black with Gold (Bronze Powder) side and Le Mans racing stripes, 50 Candy Apple Red with side stripes, 50 Wimbledon White with side stripes (as well as several models with both side and Le Mans stripes), 50 Sapphire Blue models with side stripes, and 50 Ivy Green with side stripes.

Not much else is mentioned about the car other than the seller has the original California plates that were on the Hertz rental car and also the Hertz service records for thecar.

The story goes a nice chap by the name of Scott managed to stumble across a whole heap of rotting Mustangs at an old lawnmower repair shop as he explains to Barnfinds

A few years ago I went to a local lawnmower repair shop to order some parts, the man behind the counter said he might have my exact model out behind the barn and I could get the parts used if I wanted! I said “sure lets take a look” as we get to the barn I see a Mustang fastback and start asking about it and then he shows me more barns on the property with several other classic cars and motors and parts etc.. there where storage containers and other buildings all stuffed with Mustangs and parts. the place was amazing but as you can guess… “no not for sale”.

More recently Scott went back to see if the cars were for sale and stumbled across the GT350 sititng amongst other fastbacks.

The owner says this is a 1966 GT350 “carry over”. After some research, I found out that the first 252 GT350s of 1966 where actually built from 1965 mustangs. See carryovergt350.com. He says, this is one of them. Story is a guy in the army bought it new in LA California, raced it, and then got papers to transfer to Hunter Army Base in Savannah, GA. The car has been raced, dragged, and was even a gasser at one time (yes solid axle front end too) then the current owner bought it in 1982 for $2,000. He bought it in the same condition it’s in today and still wants to restore it someday, so not for sale. Recently he lost it’s storage and here it sits outside.

It’s funny to think when we last took a look inside the CR workshop the GT500CR wsa not even being built. But now four years on we’re privilidged to have a range of continuation Shelby’s rolling off their production line. Even right hand drive versions for the UK and Australian customers.

Manufacturer and former racecar driver Carroll Shelby’s version of the Ford Mustang was powered by a 428-cubic-inch, 355-horsepower Police Interceptor engine. The car also featured a rear spoiler and dealer-installed LeMans stripes as an option. The Shelby GT-500 was both striking and rare; only 2,048 were built. A customized or original version of the 1967 Shelby GT-500 has appeared in contemporary movies and magazines, rekindling American pop culture’s fascination with the model.

The car is said to be quite unique and even features ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ engraved on the engine, along with signatures of the movie’s stars. The seller, Faisal Ballaith of Dubai, claims the engine has been replaced and now sports a Ford 428, which generates 650 horsepower.

“This car is something that nobody else has…it’s a collector’s car,” says Ballaith. It is also said to have received interest from the royal family though the car still remains unsold. The seller is asking Dhs470,000 which is roughly $USD 127,000. Not too shabby.
