You may remember a few years ago we made everyone aware of the wheels our friend Dom was producing in France. The wheels were, and still are, more superior to the US made Lecarra steering wheels of the same likeness and if you’ve ever held both in your hand, like we have, you will agree unreservedly.

We won’t go into to much detail around the quality comparrison of both. You can read the initial post HERE and follow ups HERE and HERE.

Though it now seems Scott Drake has jumped in on the steering wheels as well. Well they’ve always carried Cobra and Shelby style wheels but now they have a new version which appears to be the same 18-rivvet style as Dom’s French made beauties.

Scott Drakes premium Corso Feroce Steering Wheels you can be confident on any fierce course. Handcrafted with pride, these beautiful 1965-73 Shelby Cobra Style Steering Wheels feature a 9 hole diameter with polished aluminum spokes and hand rubbed marine mahogany. They are the perfect choice for that Classic Cobra, Mustang, or Shelby look Mustang enthusiasts crave. Stainless steel mounting screws and polished retaining ring are included for easy installation.

Word is still out on the quality of these but from experience It’s going to be very very tough to surpass the quality of the French made wheels.

Scott Drake seem to be going from strength to strength brining new reproductions to market of extremely hard to find parts. This time it’s a the extremely rare 1967 Mustang 390 GT High Performance Air Cleaner without the emissions control tube. Made from original Ford Tooling, this air cleaner is a Concours Reproduction that includes blue base and chrome lid. This is also an excellent stock appearing performance upgrade for the very restrictive 68-70 390-428 Air Cleaners. Some early production 1968 390 GT’s may have come factory with this air cleaner. For California Emissions see part C7ZZ-9600-E. Note: the outside dimension of the lid is 16.75” and will not fit the more common 17” versions.

We all know about the Painless wiring harness from Painless Performance. A simple and complete way to reqire your vintage mustang. A restorer would be mad not to consider one. Though now there is another product from the Painless Performance team that s sure to bring your vintgae muscle into twenty-first century. The new ‘Convenience Module’

So what does it do? Well the Painless Convenience Module allows you to retrofit your older vehicle with standard features found on many vehicles sold today. Cars today have many features that 15 to 20 years ago were unheard of. The Convenience Module brings these features to you in a complete kit with easy to follow instructions.

In most cases, the installation of this module requires no cutting of factory wiring and can be installed in less than a couple hours. Vehicles must switch ground through the door jamb switches/ground activated dome lights ( standard on GM & MOPAR vehicles) in order for this module to operate correctly. However instructions and parts are included for vehicles with power activated door switches.

Features included with this module are:

Dome Light Delay and Dimming – The delay feature will delay the dome light from turning off for 20 seconds after a door is closed or until the ignition is turned to the “ON” position. Once the dome light is commanded to turn off, it will slowly dim over a 5 second period of time and then go out. This dimming feature also referred to by many as “theater” lighting, creates a slower progression from light to dark.

Radio/Accessory Delay – After the ignition is turned off, even with the key removed from the ignition switch, the Radio or Accessory side of the fuse block (depending on how it is wired, see p.??) will remain powered for 15 minutes or until a door is opened.

Headlight Delay – Headlight delay will keep the headlights turned on for 15 seconds after the vehicle’s ignition has been turned off. This will help illuminate dark parking places, offering safety and security, while the driver exits the vehicle. This feature will only operate if the headlights were on before the ignition was turned off.

Headlight Chime - The Chime, supplied with the kit, will sound if the headlight switch is left in the headlights “on” or park lights “on” position and a door is opened. This will prevent coming out to your vehicle, trying to start it, only to find a dead battery because the headlight switch was left on

Automatic Headlights - Using the included light sensor, this feature will automatically turn your headlights On and Off according to the light conditions the sensor reads. The sensor will read low light levels for 10 seconds before activating the headlights. When the headlights are on, the sensor must see bright enough light levels for 5 minutes before the headlights are turned back off.

Turn Signal Alert - The Chime, supplied with the kit, will sound if the turn signal has been left on for 90 seconds. This will alert you that the turn signal has been left on my mistake.

You can find out more information over at Painless Performance

The team over at Virgin Classic Mustang have just released a new reproduction of the timing chain cover used with the aluminum water pump on the 1964 and early 1965 260 and 289 Ford small-block engines in the Mustang.

This early timing chain cover is deeper where the water pump bolts on to allow clearance for the exposed impeller on the aluminum water pump. This cover is made by Scott Drake from high quality die-cast aluminum, just like the original. It features the stock correct built-in timing pointer along with the Ford engineering number, date stamp and manufacturer logo. The detail on this front cover is extremely nice.

Though do note this cover does not have the provision for the oil filler tube that is found on the very early generator equipped cars.

Virginia Classic Mustang’s part number is EG-5701 and the timing cover currently lists for $139.95.

Detroit Speed Inc have entered the vintage Mustang parts market with some great new products. One of which are these Deep Tub inner wheel housings which are designed to accommodate wider tires and wheel packages.

The tubs are designed to keep your car looking stock all while allowing tires as wide as 315mm for the ’65-’68 Mustangs or 335mm for ’69-’70s. The great thing about these tubs is it reducies the amount of time you would normally need to do to fabricate your own deep housings. Tubs come with a replacement frame rail section and doubler reinforcement plates to accommodate a wider rear tire. Stamped from 18 gauge steel, the Deep Tubs are up to 2 3/4 inches wider than stock.

Check out their site for other new Mustang products.

The Vintage Air climate systems have been quite popular for some time now. Though not being content with this the team have have recently made some great improvements for their whole range of systems not least oh which is their new fully electronic microprocessor control system.

The new microprocessor system now ensures you no longer require cables or vacuum connections and Vintage Air say all of this helps to deliver what they call “just right temperatures” and dehumidified defrost.

Here’s the full overview:

- Fully electronic operation – No cables or vacuum controls
- Kit includes Electronic Cable Converters™ Converts Factory Controls to electronic operation- Micro-processor controlled coil temperature monitor. No capillary tube to install!
- Separate high capacity heat and cool coils
- Aluminum plate/fin A/C coil (most efficient evaporator design available)
- Copper/brass parallel flow heater coil
- Blend air door for instant temperature adjustment
- Infinite dash/floor air blend (in most applications)
- Infinite defrost / floor air blend with dedicated defrost option
- Steel firewall cover plate
- All Gen IV systems allow for optional smooth firewall configuration (must use modified hose kit)
- Positive shut off solenoid operated heater control valve in max A/C

The guys over at MustangProject are known for changing the game when it comes to lighting and electrics for vintage Mustangs. Their range of LED based products ensures your cars lights will never fail and also ensure the voltage consumption on your Mustang remains low. For Eleanor lovers their sequential taillights and their right hand drive rear turn signals have been generating some talk but now they’ve gone one further and have introduced a 7-inch headlight for For 64 1/2 thru 68, and 71 thru 73 cars.

The great thing about these lights is not only do they work for Mustangs but they will work on any car that uses a 7-inch round headlight.

The lights come with a crazy lifetime guarantee and MustangProject say they benefits of the new lights outweigh anything else on the market today. “The translation of forward lighting to a 12 volt LED headlamp application means brighter, crisper and whiter light output than incandescent alternatives, while offering longer life and greater dependability that has since become standard for LED signaling and marking products. The 7” round LED Headlamps feature solid-state circuit board assemblies for unrivaled shock and vibration resistance and hard-coated polycarbonate lenses that offers 30 times more impact strength than glass. All of these key features work toward a desired goal among end user’s, achieving a maintenance free system.”

The other good thing often overlooked is that these lights meet all standards for the DOT (Department of Transport).

The only downside you could say would be the price. Coming in at $608 for the pair is no pocket change but if they last a lifetime then maybe it is worth it? Still, I’ll be sticking with my custom made Bi-Xenon project light setup!

Having a restoration project that spans almost a decade is not always as bad or frustrating as you would think. There is a positive to take from it which isn’t always obvious. As time passes the parts and products available to restorers improve and get upgraded. That is just the case for the following parts that are now available or have been improved. I thought I’d post these here for all Mustang restorers as they are not always easy to find.

First up are gauges to fit the 1967 and 1968 bezels. I did post about the Carroll Shelby signature gauges a few years back. These were the gauges Unique Performance had specially made and installed in their Eleanor Mustangs. For those who don’t know there are actually two versions of the signature gauges. One version from Autometer and the other from Classic Intruments. So lets break them down.

Autometer version – Seen above. These are sold through the guys at Mustang Pony Cars and are only available in the imperial system. So for those using the metric system these are NOT available in KPH and Celsius. They will run you $895.00 for a set of 5 or for the complete setup with the bezel you can expect to pay $1595.00. Check out MustangPonyCars for more info. They also sell some great custom consoles worth having a look at.

Classic Instruments version – These unlike the Autometer version are available in both imperial and metric. So if you are after it in KPH rather than MPH these are your gauges. I can’t seem to find them on their site but I have confirmed directly that they do sell them. Please refer to the video HERE for a good look at them.

While on the topic of gauges there are also some nice new digital gauges out from Dakota Digital. Their new VHX series offer a modern display easy on the eyes in both daylight and at night. Fully lit needles, backlit faces, and highly visible LCD message centers are a few of the things that you can see which set the VHX Series apart from yesterday’s traditional approach to instrumentation. A few of the features which you don’t normally see are the micro-controlled precision stepper motors, solid state sensors for unparalleled accuracy, and user-customizable display feedback, all supported by an unrivalled limited lifetime warranty. Check their site HERE for more information.

Now how about the old MSD-6AL ignition. A favorite amongst many Mustang owners. Well if you haven’t checked them out in the last few years then you may not have seen the all new digital version which improves on the old one. On the outside you’ll notice a slimmer design and some rotary dials which eliminates the need for pills. It also uses less amps with a current draw of .7 amp per 1,000 rpm as opposed to 1.0 am per 1,000 rpm with previous 6AL. For a more in-depth look check out their site HERE and stangtv’s review

Last but not least is not really a part but still something needed to protect your hard earned restoration. It’s a car cover and one you may remember seeing on the Unique Performance cars. The UP guys had custom ones made which sported the Carroll Shelby signature on the front, as seen above. Unfortunately this exact one is not available. Covercraft, the company who made them, have confirmed they cannot make the Shelby signature covers, possibly due to licensing. But don’t worry they can still make you a cover with other Mustang related insignia including various FORD, Cobra and Mustang logos. Have a look at this page and scroll down for all available logos.

Can you believe it’s been 12 years since the Gone in 60 Seconds remake hit our screens? And over those years we have posted about and hunted down parts related to the on-screen beauty that is Eleanor. Over time though some of those parts have become discontinued and have become increasingly harder to find. The lights are one such area. Fortunately user ’82firebird’ over at the Eleanor Mustang forums has put together a nice summary of the PIAA light variations that are available or have been available over the years.

Below I’ve just regurgitated what ’82firebird’ has said on the forum. If you would like to read the follow up discussion head over to the forum here.

Headlamps
4060 appears to be the original part number used. They are basically 6″ headlamp so any of this size would work. So the current part# would be 4062 or 4010. This is a little iffy issue as the movie lamps where neither the 5″ or 7″ standard headlamps but an aftermarket 6″ fog-light. So it may be easier to convert to one of the more conventional sizes.

(don’t know about this as the headlights on the movie car are in fact larger than the lower fog lights (see pic above).

Small blue lights – 959 was the original part number. If you do searches you can still find these for sale, but the blue colored lights have mostly dried up. There are lights being sold to replace these, such as the PIAA 910 however they are crystal clear; they are not blue or foggy white as the 959′s.

Large fog lights -PIAA offers several lights in this size range. 8360 was the original part number and part of the 80 series. The new part number for these would be a 8362 or 8364 and these are also readily available through searches. You could also use the PIAA 40 series or 520.

Small clear lamps – F/R-1252 was the original part number but these can now be found under 1200 series lamps (1202) which are probably the hardest to find. These lights could be replaced with the more readily-available 004XT or possibly the 1000XT or 1100 series.

PIAA 80 Series

Well there you have it. A pretty comprehensive run down of the lights you will need. Thanks to ’82firebird’ for compiling it.
