Dave’s story is an inspiring one. It shows with a lot of hard work a movie correct car is possible. Though for those who don’t have an Eleanor or are going down a different restoration path we can still marvel at these pictures. One you may notice taken from a boom attached to the car shows a law enforcement vehicle blocking Eleanor’s path. When we spoke to Dave he jokingly shared the story with us.

Some lady drove by us with the camera rig on the car and assumed we were “up to no good”. Naturally the car being the attention whore that it was it turned into the cops taking pictures of it, haha. They loved the fact that I run the California black plate (the car is registered in NY to the tag LYN 274)

We’re told next month there is a professional video to be released. If the quality of the photos are anything to go off then we’re in for a real treat.

Restoring a car such as a Mustang is a very personal thing. There’s many Eleanors out there with their own unique touches, but for me the movie car is still the best looking one I have seen and as Dave explains he too has the same feelings.

“Ever since I saw the movie (Gone In 60 Seconds) in theaters back in 2000 I fell in love with the GT500 that Memphis stole running from the cops. I was hooked! However only being 10 years old it was a far off dream. As I got older I made models of the car and in 2003 I got to sit in one of the original movie cars in Las Vegas and eventually started working saving money for my first Mustang, a rio red 99 cobra.

After owning that for 2 years I sold it and purchased a DSG 03 cobra as a gradation present for myself. A few years later I was approached by someone about buying the car, so I sold it to him and began looking for a 1967 Fastback shell.

I saw so many Eleanor clones out there, however none of them captured the look of the car that captured my interest almost 10 years ago. My goal was to build the most movie correct Eleanor out there, PERIOD. I made probably 100 phone calls to the guys at Cinema Vehicle Services to find out everything I could on how to make the car as accurate as possible. I had spent years doing research on part numbers, paint codes, tire sizes etc. I went as far as having them measure the grilles for me and how many bars were in each, little details like the lower grille bars being further apart then the upper. I found out what mufflers were used on the movie cars, which were flow master 40 series. This is a straight through muffler unlike the in/out muffler many people run.

In order to get the movie correct sound it would take a one off system. The exhaust tips on the car not “movie correct” however they are the ones Borla made for Cinema Vehicle Services when the movie cars were redone after the movie in order to make the exhaust functional. These were a limited production run and were not available to the public unless you purchased the body kit from Cinema Vehicle Services.

I spent days staring at pictures of the original 12 cars trying to find out what made them have that movie look. There are some nice cars out there however every single car I found has something that was off whether it be the chrome bullet mirrors or the taillight frames not painted black, molded body kit, incorrect front lighting, incorrect grilles, and of course the all important movie hood.

The interiors were the same way, many cars use the white faced shelby gauges, pro car seats, or a center console. The “correct” Eleanor is a stock back 1967 Fastback deluxe interior with comfortweave upholstery, a non padded Shelby roll bar without shoulder harnesses and they all had a 18 rivet moto-lita steering wheel (not the commonly used 6 rivet wheel), an Autometer monater tach with built in shift light, 120MPH speedo (not the shelby 140 MPH speedo), the Total Control Products pedal covers, and the “go baby go”/ nitrous armed switch.

Another thing that I also found incorrect was the color, the color is commonly known as pepper gray. However I talked to Bruckheimer and found out that the chase scene was shot with a yellow tint lens to give the scene a morning look. Therefore this would throw off the color, in order to correct this and make the car appear as it did on screen the color had to be altered to compensate for the polar filter being absent.

Another thing that makes or breaks these Eleanor cars is the stance, the movie hero car has total control coil overs. In person I was surprised how low the car was, the car tucked tire all around. Once again It took me a couple tries with different setups but I finally got the car sitting nice. I tracked down the correct PIAA lights which had been out of production, the handmade PS engineering wheels and the correct body kit pieces. Eventually I got all of the stuff I needed to make the car the car it is today.”

I’m speechless. The level of detail and the amount of research Dave has gone into is astonishing. The photos below are of Dave’s actual car. I had to look at these a few times as he has even gone to the touble of positioning the car in movie like positions.

The car has needed alot of structural work and new metal though Dee has been working hard and still has lots planned.

His car started out as a standard fastback with a 289 automatic transmission and the car was imported into the United Kingdom from the US in December 2009.

At the moment the car is being body prepped, kit has been fitted and hopefully will go into paint in October with a one off Black metallic/blue flip paint, than its a case of putting it all back together.

You may remember last year Adam was the proud owner of two cars. Eleanor and Angelina. Well now he’s added a coupe to the lineup which he’s dubbed ‘Memphis’ which has recently been painted and finished and says “It has now been approved by the engineer as possibly a world first being the only licensed and registered 5 seat Eleanor I know of!” You can see how that would be a plus for any hire car business. Especially for weddings.

The car was from Tennessee as a father/son project. “It didn’t need too much on importing to get sorted and up to scratch. We nicknamed this one Memphis: The 5 seater coupe! It still has a big 351 V8 and side exhausts as well as the 67 Shelby rear lights and trims. It’s now the correct pepper grey and black so matches perfectly with our supercharged fastback.” Adam said.

The original car I featured is going strong as Adam explains. “Eleanor is still a blast to drive. A couple of little items mechanically and body wise have had to be tidied up but it has been so busy winter. She certainly does need time to enjoy the celebrity life style and everyone who books the car falls in love with her.”

So that just leaves the third car is his collection, Angelina. “I went away from the RHD conversion given that I am happy with Eleanor being a LHD and have decided to get the old girl finished off asap.” He said. “Basically everything except the skirts and the fitting of the guards and bonnet is done (incl engine, trans and seats), so looking to get her finished now. She already has bookings queing up for her!”

I must say having three cars is something most of us dream of. I still cannot wait to get my hands on my car, one day, when she’s finished. But I must congratulate Adam on the time and effort he’s put into it. Thanks for sharing your passion with us.

“I purchased the car in June of 2008.  The car came with rockers, lower scoops, upper scoops, and rear flares installed.  The rear wheels wells had already been mini-tubbed to allow  the use of 315mm tires, possibly even larger.  Bodywork started on the car in April of 2009 and was finished in late April of 2010.” explains Christopher.

He then ran into some trouble that threatened to derail the whole project “The car seemed to be cursed at first, as the first shop went bankrupt, and then the second shop just could not seem to get around to doing the necessary work on the car.  Upper and lower nose, fenders, deck-lid, end caps and taillamp panel were all purchased from the company that provided Unique with fiberglass.  Unfortunately, the fiberglass was very ill fitting and required an enormous amount of work for it to fit.  The fiberglass fenders were the worst part of the entire kit.”

While at Barrett-Jackson in January of 2009, Christopher spotted a NOS 03 4.6L supercharged Terminator motor.  The price was too good to pass up and he purchased the motor.  “I had not put much though into stuffing a 4.6L into the 67 Mustang Fastback, but once i saw the motor i knew i had to have it.” Christopher said.  With 4.6L engine the shock towers had to be highly modified to fit it into the car.  Other necessary modifications and parts include a canton front sump oil pan, Dave Stribling restorations Engine mounts, custom radiator mounts, oil filter relocation kit, Ron Francis/The Detail Zone wiring and computer flashing, and notching of the frame rail for the alternator to fit.

The 4.6L engine is mated to a T-56 six speed transmission with a hydraulic clutch. Surprisingly, they did not need to modify the transmission tunnel to fit the t-56.

The front suspension is a fully adjustable coilover system from RRS and features slotted  rotors with 2 piston calipers. The rear suspension is the G-link system from Total control products. It features fully adjustable coilovers and minus a few small welds, is more or less a bolt in system.   The rear end is a 9” currie truloc with moser 31 spline axles with Wilwood 10.5” disc brakes.

Quite a car don’t you think? Here are some other specs about the car:

The car is currently at DVS restorations where it is having:
• the shock towers are being modified further
• Radiator and cooling fan fit
• Aftercooler and lines installed
• Power steering cooler installed
• AC condenser and lines installed
• Heater hoses and radiator hoses fit
• Oil filter relocation kit installed
• Hydraulic throwout bearing installed
• Engine compartment and underside of hood painted black
• Transmission wiring correctly installed
• Custom gas filler neck fabricated
• Front exhaust tubes custom fit and made and, a custom driveshaft made.

“I was hoping to have the car in my hands, however it’s not. It is now having a lot of the great stuff finally put in stereo, motor, gear box, interior etc.
I am pushing the guys to get it done and up to Sydney before December this year.”

Best of all the motor was put on the dyno and the numbers speak for themselves.

HP: 510hp at the flywheel
Torque: 4500 foot pounds @ 3000rpm
Super charger Boost: 4 pound only
NOS: 0

Not bad at all with only 4 pound of boost. Excitedly Damian says they are thinking of running 7-8 pound of boost with NOS. Just think of what it could do then.

We’re staying all over this build and will bring updates as Damian sends them.

Back in April I posted about Adam’s LHD and RHD Supercharged Eleanors that were being built here in Australia. Well it’s been a few months and I have a nice update for you all. Last week Adam informed me that the LHD car was now on the road!

“I am planning to eventually pay for these cars by driving them in weddings and for special occasions.” Adam says he always wanted a signature car, but the problems were finding one, maintaining it and of course the cost involved so he settled on the Mustang “The Mustangs were a good choice because they are very popular so parts are easy to get. The Eleanor Mustangs are great too because they are exclusive. We are building two Eleanor fastbacks to run with our chauffer and wedding car business. One is Left hand drive and one is Right hand drive.”

As you can see Adam seems pretty busy already using the car for weddings as mentioned above and I’d dare say a hell of a lot of cruising the streets. It’s always good to see projects reach the end of their restoration as more often than not these projects take so long we never hear what happens to them, mine included!

It’s not too often you will find someone who owns not one but two Eleanors but that is just the case for one of our readers, Adam. So you may ask, isn’t one Eleanor enough? Why two? Well Adam has a plan because unless you are made of money, building two cars will be very costly.

So to pay for these cars Adam says “I am planning to eventually pay for these cars by driving them in weddings and for special occasions.” Adam says he always wanted a signature car, but the problems were finding one, maintaining it and of course the cost involved so he settled on the Mustang “The Mustangs were a good choice because they are very popular so parts are easy to get. The Eleanor Mustangs are great too because they are exclusive. We are building two Eleanor fastbacks to run with our chauffer and wedding car business. From the sounds of it Adam has done his homework, already looking into the tax implications and benefits of owning the cars under a business and of course the income the business itself generates from the cars. But back to the cars.

Adam has decided to call his cars ‘Eleanor’, a LHD formerly gold car and ‘Angelina‘ a RHD car which was formerly a primed shell. Adam says “The first fastback I bought (Angelina) was a 68 primed shell “ready for paint” only it wasn’t. It had 65 rear quarters, a 65 front etc. and a few other major problems like the high fill wasn’t sticking to the primer. I didn’t know this at the time of purchase but at least there was no rust and it came with a heap of new parts, all the seats, liners, etc. $20k worth of a shell essentially although it did come with all the paperwork to register it and a motor and gearbox (although the motor had to be rebuilt).”

“I had gotten onto some guys who really know mustangs who had a look Angelina and said they could get it cleaned up and painted with all the right bits for a price I could live with! They could also do all the bits required to complete the car from there. Once I did the maths on what a registered as new fastback was worth I gave the green light – still with the intention of selling it. So the boys started work on straightening out Angelina and once the body work was done I was offered to sell it and I would have got my money back- all of it… but I couldn’t do it. I wanted to see this car restored fully into something great.”

Currently Adam’s Angelina is undergoing some work but what about the other car? Eleanor? well Adam explains “She started life in California as a gold 68 fastback Mustang with a 289 v8 and c4 auto! It had two owners in the states both in California where the car was made and then it sold to a guy in QLD, Australia who brought it out here and then sold it to me for $AUD35,000.”

“The car was in such good shape and had obviously been cared for in fact one of the panel beaters who does a lot of Mustang work said it was one of the best three he had ever seen and that he didn’t know you could still buy cars like it. Not one panel had to be altered and there was no rust anywhere!”

“I got a road worthy certificate for it and got it registered in my name. As is and driveable with all fees paid it owed me $AUD40k. At that time I had an offer on it of about that from a guy who just missed out on it from Carsales.com but I couldn’t let her go.”

So two cars and the lure of the Mustang was too strong for Adam. Owning a Mustang myself i can fully understand this feeling, there is something about the Mustang that makes me wonder if I can ever sell her when she is finished.

In January I posted about Michael’s world first factory right hand drive Shelby. Well this week he’s given me an update with pictures and video. Take a look after the jump.

From the looks of it it seems Michael’s build is coming along very well and very quickly! How jealous am I! Here’s Michael’s update.

“The Boys at Robert St Restorations have been working around the clock on my car, they have been working on it 6 days per week. You will notice that in the last month they have covered quite a bit of ground, the body kit is only a few days now from completion and I must say they have done an incredible job.

The body kits are a huge job to install, 1st the bonnet is a lot thicker than an original metal framed bonnet, hence when we first bolted it up it sat 1/2 an inch above the guards. I think the rear end was probably the most time consuming, once again the fibreglass boot was thicker than the original.

The Dynacorn shells don’t come perfect from the factory so some minor adjustments are required to make them right, I’ve been informed that the following shells should be corrected from the factory so some of the work we did won’t be needed.

Soon the guys will put all the running gear back in and do all the testing and send it for paint in 2-3 weeks.”
